The Outpost Range

An exploration of PNW provenance

Westland’s position is that American Single Malt Whiskey is not a fixed or known element, but a new frontier to be explored. They also believe that whiskey is, like an agricultural product, an expression of the region in which it is made. To demonstrate and discuss these ideas, they developed The Outpost Range, a collection of three annual releases that explore in detail the three primary factors of whiskey flavor in a hyper-regional way. Garryana explores the PNW’s regional oak Quercus garrana in casks finishing. Colere explores the impact of boutique barley varietals, and Solum explores the nuances of regional flora in Pacific Northwest peat.

51 Eggs developed a packaging system that referenced the visual language of exploration, navigation, and signaling—lighthouses, semaphores, and signal flags—all of which visually communicate across wild and rough terrain. Westland’s use of vintage topographic maps was continued here, but all references to civilization and written information were removed, leaving only the landscape's elevations. Then, a layer of cartographic triangulation was overlaid, referencing the manual map-making process used by explorers in times past.

For the marketing campaign and promotional materials, the series was presented within the context of exploration, styled with vintage cartographic devices and tools, custom-made flags representing each release, and within the landscapes each release explored, taking us on our own expeditions into the wild places across the state.
